So you’ve got some filming coming up. Perhaps there will be a camera crew or maybe you’ll be filming yourself. Location, timing, equipment, what to say, will all be things to organise. Sometimes what you’ll wear can be forgotten, making it a last minute decision that’s a little stressful. So I got out from behind the camera and in front (gulp – if I can do it, you can too), to give you several tips to help make your decision easier and prevent any delays to the shoot.

Hey, it’s Kylie from Story Orchard here.

Choosing clothing can be difficult normally but when you choose the wrong thing when filming, it can cause delays. So here
are a few tips on what to wear and what not to wear.

1. Think brand and message

So the first tip is an obvious one but one that people can sometimes forget and that is to choose clothing that suits the brand of your company and the message of your video. So if you work in a corporate environment you are probably going to wear something corporate. Or if you are a personal trainer then active wear is totally fine.

2. Think background colour

If you know the background you are going to be filming with then it is important to keep that background colour in mind when choosing your clothing. You don’t want to pick anything that will blend in or clash. This becomes really important if you are filming with a green screen. You want to avoid wearing anything green, otherwise, parts of you will literally disappear into the background.

3. Avoid fine stripes and busy patterns

Something you might not know is to avoid clothing with fine stripes and busy patterns. The reason for this is they can cause an optical illusion, which can be distracting from what you are saying. A safe bet is to choose plain clothing that you know will work with your background.

4. Choose quiet accessories

Be careful of the accessories you choose to wear when filming as these can sometimes make unwanted noise. For instance, if you are somebody that wears multiple bracelets, these may clink together as you talk and move your hands. Likewise, if you are going to be sitting behind a desk it may pay to take off your watch as this can sometimes bang on the table as you talk.

5. Consider microphones

Another thing to consider is that if you know you are going to be filming with a lapel mic like I am today, you may want to wear something that works with the mic. Collars are great to attach the mic to but also wearing a top with a bottom makes it much easier to attach the mic at the back.

6. Bring extra options

My last tip and probably the most important is just to bring a couple of options with you to the filming. That way if the location changes or a colleague asks you to change, you’ve got a backup. I also recommend not wearing your preferred option on the way into filming just in case you get caught in the rain or you spill food on yourself at morning tea.
